It was back in 2011 that American a cappella group Pentatonix (PTX) shot to fame. The group won the 3rd season of NBC’s The Sing-Off, revealing their ridiculous talents to the world in the process.

With a $200,000 prize fund in their pockets and a recording contract with Sony Music, it was clear the group weren’t going to be another flash in the pan.

As it happens, they definitely weren’t. They’ve since moved from strength to strength, proving that they’re capable of wowing the music scene for a long time yet. Perhaps it’s their cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s iconic classic “Sound of Silence” that truly pays testament to their ability.

A thousand groups and one have tried their hand at covering the song, but very few do so in a manner that leaves audiences speechless. Of course, PTX aren’t just any usual band, and they somehow managed to weave five voices to get the best out of a song written for two …

The line-up, now consisting of Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, Scott Hoying and Matt Sallee, is bursting at the seams with talent. Anyone doubting that need look no further than the song below.

Bear in mind that creating a buzz around a cover of “The Sound of Silence” is no easy thing to accomplish these days. Disturbed’s heavy metal cover became a viral hit for its totally different spin on the classic, while a multitude of talented performers and bands have tried to do the same thing.

When it comes to PTX’s rendition, however, I think it’s fair to say they’ve managed to do what very few can: give us a cover that is truly refreshing.
